How We Survive--March 9, 2010
Grand Atlantic’s new release blends the ethereal ambiance reminiscent of the time when “bands like Teenage Fanclub, the Posies, Redd Kross and Velvet Crush made power pop with enough sonic muscle to rival the grunge band.” (Underneathica) Their power-pop prowess layered with a swaggering rhythm section, crunchy riffs and chiming, Byrds-esque guitars, welds seamlessly to robust pop songs with instantly-memorable choruses. How We Survive found the band working with award-winning Australian producer Magoo (Midnight Oil) and the USA Network using “Holding Pattern” off the album in a six week summer campaign.
Age of Discovery
Brooklyn’s Fan-Tan formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2006 when Indonesian expatriates Kuki and Sandee Kooks joined forces with Ryan Lee Dunlap. Intent on diverging from the college rock scene of the area, the band drew on influence of the Manchester, England music scene circa 1983. Although Fan-Tan is an “east meets west” band on the surface, the true connection is an affinity for British post-punk and new wave. Haunting synth-pop hooks and soothing undertones underscore the emotional connection attributed to that sound, a sense of void filled musically within the soul’s cavity.
Colors--April 27, 2010
Employing a realistic perspective on the band, the music and the industry, Washington DC's No Second Troy teeters on the edge of indie rock with introspective anthems rich in explosive vocal melodies, driven by railing guitars, and balanced by subtle layers of piano and organ.
"While the sound is certainly expansive, Leopold and His Fiction also manages to exude a certain kind of folk-tinged, backwoods charm that makes them much more than just a straight up rock-and-roll band."--NPR Second Stage
Leopold and his Fiction is the balanced reincarnate of a sultry era of western darkness underneath big city lights and country back roads leading to the morning shore of a transpiring musical horizon. Climbing to #30 on the CMJ charts with their self-titled debut, Leopold and his Fiction providing Detroit filth with guitar orientation breathing parallel to rasped vocals, while acquiring a moody-pop frame derived from distant genres and unwavering imagination in an attempt to reinvent what each member feels has dissipated from the greater measure of music.
Not many musicians can pull off an album about space, time, and theoretical physics, but that's exactly what the Alan Cohen Experience accomplishes with the newest album, Space & Time. While reading Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time”, Cohen found inspiration in each chapter for a new song, including the introduction and conclusion. Co-produced by Cohen himself and Tony Goddess of Papas Fritas, this new album has greatly expanded Cohen's musical talent and shows his versatility in exploring several different areas of songwriting.
