Wee Hairy Beasties

Holidays Gone Crazy Release on November 4th

Now Chicago’s motley kiddie band crew come to your house with a covered hot dish of brand new songs for the holidays when they release Holidays Gone Crazy on November 4, 2008 through their new label Wee Beatz, a subsidiary of Carrot Top Records. Wee Hairy Beasties—led by head Mekons JON LANGFORD (WACO BROTHERS, PINE VALLEY, COSMONAUTS) and SALLY TIMMS, with vocalist KELLY HOGAN (Neko Case, Pine Valley Cosmonauts, The Rock*A*Teens) and the mighty jug band talents of front porch settin’, old-timey blues band DEVIL IN A WOODPILE—stews up a diverse bunch of new tales: creepy lullabies, nighttime stories about lonely vampires, and sunny day action tunes about playing in the sand.

Vivian Darkbloom

"Take Note: Vivian Darkbloom are clearly a band on the rise. Expect one hell of a tight stage performance from this 21st Century garage band."

Vivian Darkbloom borrowed their name in homage to Vladimir Nabokov and also as a nod to the simple idea of an alter-ego; the band, while riotous and raucous onstage, are in fact shy and bookish offstage. Onstage is where you can see first-hand, Rob Morris' (vocals, guitar) must-see secret weapon: the Wii Guitar. Garnering attention from Gibson, Yamaha, Nintendo, and most recently, from members of Aerosmith, Morris’s musical innovation also counts appearances on usatoday.com, wired.com and engadget.com as some of its high-profile exposure.

The Lemurs

The Lemurs Plays Spaceland on December 1st

Undiscovered Band of the Month--"For every synth melody or dance beat employed, the Lemurs find a counterbalance of raw, driving guitar and frenetic rhythm that imbues their music with a crackling atmospheric sheen and anxious intensity."--Filter Magazine

With howling guitars, deep synth parts, driving bass and danceable drums, The Lemurs invoke the spirits of the night without hiding in the darkness, earning them Filter Magazine’s honor of “Undiscovered Band of the Month” and a nod from Andy Langer who declared their debut EP one of the “Top Ten Texas Records of 2006.”

Formed in 2004, The Lemurs continue to focus on the strength of their live performance, playing with acts like Stars, Britt Daniel (Spoon), Silversun Pickups and Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene) while also holding down sets at internationally recognized music conference SXSW and Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Golden Bloom

Shawn Fogel & The LeeVees Play The Yule Ball at Middle East on December 21, 2008

"Handling most of the instrumentation himself, Fogel manages to offer a fresh take on ye olde tradition of sensitive power pop."

An ability to play a large crop of instruments with equal amounts of precision and passion allows Golden Bloom frontman, Shawn Fogel, to take the wheel in his own band while holding on to his solo roots. Currently in the studio with producer/engineer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Mates of State), Fogel plans to release Golden Bloom’s next LP in early 2009.

Leopold and His Fiction

Ain't No Surprise Release on January 12th

"Leopold holds on to their charmingly bucolic pop sound and supplement it with a bass and occasional organ... More great music from a great band you need to know now."--Indie Rock Reviews

Leopold and his Fiction is the balanced reincarnate of a sultry era of western darkness underneath big city lights and country back roads leading to the morning shore of a transpiring musical horizon. Climbing to #30 on the CMJ charts with their self-titled debut, Leopold and his Fiction providing Detroit filth with guitar orientation breathing parallel to rasped vocals, while acquiring a moody-pop frame derived from distant genres and unwavering imagination in an attempt to reinvent what each member feels has dissipated from the greater measure of music.

Canadian Invasion

Three Cheers for the Invisible Hand Releases in February 17, 2009

"They also possess British-pop sensibilities mixed with guitar-driven American rock that can leave you happily humming the tunes."--Washington Post

Canadian Invasion takes a little American pride, some tongue-in-cheek Canadian love and a wealth of inspiration to bring together their satirical and catchy pop songs that question American "values".

Old Believers

The Old Believers Plays Backspace on November 18th

“Singer Nelson Kempf's expressive, bluesy croon is a throwback to ages long ago; paired with the group's alt-country stylings, the music he produces with bandmate Keeley Boyle is both vivid and compelling.”

Profiled in Under the Radar's Pleased to Meet You, The Old Believers maintain a sound from anytime and everywhere, while they are unmistakably here and now. Their honest, pop framework is outfitted with aesthetics of blues, americana, old-time, and jazz, with songs ranging from warm, embracing folk ditties to noise wrenched, desperate country ballads.

KatJonBand

"A match made in heaven...Jon Langford's rough 'n' tumble guitar work sits wonderfully up against Kat Ex's leveled grit behind the set; KatJonBand has vigor belying the years of experience between the two creators."--BLURT

Jon Langford of The Mekons and Kat Ex of The Ex share a history outside their duo, KatJonBand. The Mekons and The Ex have always been explicitly political bands, so it’s no surprise that the Iraq war, globalization, class, greed, patriotism and kinky sex all rear their ugly heads in these bone-bare, blood-boiling anthems and that publications like BLURT, PunkGlobe and Pitchfork have been paying attention to their battle cry's. With Kat on drums and Jon on guitar, the duo shares the microphone, summoning Jon’s gruff Welsh pirate howl and Kat’s clear-as-a-bell Swabian soar.
